ISSUES
Dr. Sherard’s career in education has helped to create better job opportunities for many students. She has taught at the university, community college and high school levels, and is a graduate of the University of Iowa, Michigan State University and South Carolina State College with degrees in mathematics teaching and natural sciences. She has a solid record of service needed to improve our state schools, including providing affordable and accessible education to students.

Sherard will provide a strong voice and superb representation in Sacramento for the citizens of San Diego on issues of importance such as education, health care, senior rights, environmental protection, civil rights and livable wages. She has participated in several public proceedings at city hall, including participation on community planning councils and in town hall meetings.

She is committed to fighting for veteran justice, senior rights, humane rights for farm and domestic workers and opportunities for all Americans. She is not afraid to take a stand on difficult issues such as equalization in education, prison reform, child care, livable wages, affordable housing, environmental justice and infrastructure issues, including state and county transportation and water-levee concerns in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Her campaign is grassroots, and will focus on two basic principles and three important issues: The two principles are: (1) social and economic justice, and (2) environmental planning to protect parks, drinking water and air from polluters, and rebuild our aging delta levee system. The three issues are: (1) budgeting for quality state schools/programs, prison reform and up-to-standard transportation networks; (2) medical insurance reform; and (3) clean-up elections.

Sherard has a history of activism in the San Diego community. Sherard served as an alternate on the redistricting committee for the city of San Diego. Currently, she is a past member of the Mayor’s Advisory Board, founder and past president of the Martin Luther King Democratic Club, former member of the executive board of the state Democratic Party and 78th AD representative to the California Democratic Party. She is always willing to fight for the little guy, and not afraid to take on powerful special interest such as Enron and Duke Power.

Sherard spent eight days in September ’05 in New Orleans delivering relief services to Katrina survivors. Upon returning, she published three articles on the ordeal of survivors and the long history of disenfranchisement of its working poor. She has firsthand experience on the effect of substandard and inadequate levees on populations and the surrounding environment.

Sherard cares about people. She has provided free tutoring to students for passing the Math Exit Exam and continues to offer her services to empower the young and the old. She has helped various groups advocate for services such as free community clinics, and human treatment and justice for farm workers and domestic workers. She has been a strong advocate for senior rights, including issues of health care, social security, affordable housing and prescription drugs.

Sherard is a retired educator, but continues to volunteer her services in the community. She serves on several local boards: The Girl’s Club of San Diego, Inc., Black Storytellers of San Diego, Inc., All Congregations Together (ACT), Filipino American Community Empowerment (FACE), and the Paradise Hills Park and Recreation Council. Sherard is thoughtful, independent and committed. She will bring fresh ideas to Sacramento.

Sherard is a long-standing resident of the 78th assembly district where she has raised a family, advocated for quality schools, and worked to keep neighborhood streets safe and clean. She will work to improve the criminal justice system and public works infrastructure- transportation, highway systems and state parks, including a sound water levee system in the Sacramento Delta. Sherard knows first-hand the issues affecting you, and will work to make our district a better place to live.
